Day Trips from Marrakech

Read the grid the way a traveller reads it, from the left. A corridor with a fare and a frequency is a day you can build yourself. A corridor with the words not in the network is a day where the vehicle is the product, and the tour price is buying transport that does not otherwise exist.

Essaouira, the One Corridor with a Real Timetable

The Essaouira corridor deserves its own sentence, because it is the one place where the independent option is genuinely better than the organised one. Supratours leaves Marrakech at 07:30, 09:00, 10:30, 12:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 19:00, and comes back at 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30, 17:00 and 18:30, every service direct and every service 3 h 00. CTM runs a single 08:30 out and a single 17:00 back.

So the coach passenger picks the first departure and the last return and gets about eight hours in the town, while the coach tour gets there at half past ten and leaves in the middle of the afternoon.

Where Neither Carrier Goes at All

In the other direction the absence is the story. Neither operator lists Ouzoud, Azilal, Demnate, Tanant, Afourer, Bin El Ouidane, Imlil, Asni or Agafay anywhere in its network. That is not a gap in this research: it is a verified absence from the station registers both companies publish through their own booking engines.

Beni Mellal is the closest either gets to the falls, and the Ourika and Rheraya valleys are served by shared grand taxis whose fares no commune, province or ministry publishes.

One more thing the booking systems settle. There is no train to any of these places. Every Marrakech to Essaouira and Marrakech to Ouarzazate service inside the rail operator's own system is coded as a coach rather than a train, and Marrakech is the southern terminus of the rail network for this whole corridor.

If a page offers you day trips from Marrakech by train, it is describing something that does not exist.

Casablanca, and Why No Train Figure Appears on This Page

Two of the things people search for around this page are a Casablanca day trip and a day trip by train, and both run into the same wall. Marrakech is the southern terminus of the national rail network, so a train can only take you north, and Casablanca is the nearest large city on that line; south and west of here, including the Essaouira corridor, every service the rail operator sells is a Supratours coach rather than a train, which its own booking system confirms by filing them under the coach range. What this guide cannot give you is the number.

Every ONCF address we tried refused the connection or served a certificate that would not verify, so no fare and no journey time for a Marrakech to Casablanca train is published here rather than copied from a blog. Buy that leg at the station counter on Avenue Hassan II, where the day's timetable is the authority, and treat Casablanca as an overnight rather than a day out.

The comparison only works where a fare exists to compare against, so the table below covers the four corridors that have one. On the other four there is no published figure at all, which is itself the answer: you are negotiating, and nobody can tell you the number in advance.

What the Gap Actually Buys

Two conclusions come out of that table and they point in opposite directions. On Essaouira the independent trip is worth its extra dirhams because it buys hours, not comfort: eleven in the town against four. On Ouzoud and Ait Ben Haddou the organised day is both cheaper and the only thing that reaches the site, because the last leg of each is on nobody's timetable and no official source names a grand-taxi fare for it.

The Four Corridors with No Published Fare

A warning about the four unpriced corridors. Every blog that quotes you a firm dirham figure for a shared grand taxi to Setti Fatma, to Imlil or out to a camp in the Agafay is quoting a guess. The Commune de Marrakech publishes nothing on grand-taxi stands or fares, no province or ministry publishes a shared-seat tariff for any of these routes, and the only rule that is actually published is that a petit taxi inside the city must run its meter.

Agree the whole-car price before the doors close, in dirhams, for the return as well as the outward run.

For the same reason the cheapest listing is not always the right buy. On the Ourika day the $13.27 trip and the $17.80 one both run seven hours and both include lunch, and the difference is what the itinerary adds around the waterfall walk. On the Essaouira day the two products differ by about an hour and a dollar.

Compare what each one removes from your day rather than the headline figure, because on these corridors the headline figures are all within a few dollars of each other anyway.

Door-to-door hours below are the operators' own stated durations where the product states one, and our routing where it does not. They include the drive at both ends, which is the number the listings tend to bury.

Our Pick, If You Only Have One Day Out

If you only have one day out of the city, take the Ourika valley. It is the cheapest, the closest real landscape, it needs no negotiation once the trip is booked, and it leaves you back in Marrakech in time for the square. If you have two, add Essaouira and do it on the coach rather than in a van.

If you have three and want the thing that looks least like anywhere else, the ksar over the Tizi n'Tichka is worth its seven hours of road.

The one combination that does not work is trying to pair two of the long days back to back. Ouzoud, Essaouira and Ait Ben Haddou each take ten to twelve hours door to door, and two of those consecutively leaves nothing of the city itself, which is what most people came for. The list of what is inside the walls is longer than this page and none of it involves six hours in a minibus.

The Agafay hills are the clearest case. The road register that numbers every classified road in the country contains no Agafay entry at all, and the tracks that run from the surrounding provincial roads into the camp area are not in the classified network. Neither carrier lists a stop at Agafay, Tameslouht, Lalla Takerkoust or Amizmiz.

So there is no fare to compare, no stand that any official source names, and no way to arrive except a vehicle you have arranged.

The Ourika and Rheraya valleys are the second case, and there the absence is stranger, because the roads are busy. The last section of the Ourika road carries 6,666 vehicles a day and the road up to Imlil carries 1,170, so these are not empty tracks. They are simply served by shared grand taxis rather than by scheduled coaches, and the shared-taxi layer is the part of Moroccan transport that publishes nothing: no tariff, no timetable, no stand register.

Ouzoud is the third, and the most awkward, because the site itself is a national destination. The Province d'Azilal publishes a page about the falls and concedes in another that its tourism potential still needs basic infrastructure, access roads among them. Its entire road network is 1,061 km of which one national road crosses the province for 26.98 km.

Neither carrier serves Ouzoud, Azilal or Demnate, and Beni Mellal, the closest town on either network, is still about 50 km away in a straight line.

The practical consequence is the same in all three cases: compare the tour against not going, not against a fare. And if you would rather stay inside the walls, the ticketed monuments are all within a walk of each other and every one of them has a published price, which is more than any road out of the city can say.

• Supratours runs seven coaches a day to Essaouira and CTM runs one, and the fares differ by five dirhams, so the choice of carrier is a choice of timetable rather than of price (Supratours and CTM booking APIs, read in Q3 2026).
• There is no train to any destination on this page. Every Marrakech to Essaouira and Marrakech to Ouarzazate service inside the rail operator's own system is coded as a coach, and the rail network does not run south of Marrakech on this corridor (ONCF service ranges, read in Q3 2026).
• Ouzoud, Azilal, Demnate, Imlil, Asni and Agafay appear in neither the Supratours 177-station network nor CTM's 119-city network, so four of these eight destinations have no scheduled public service at all (both carriers' own station registers).
• The last leg to Ait Ben Haddou is covered by no official carrier source: the coaches stop at Ouarzazate and the ksar is in neither network (Supratours station list; CTM network list).
• Merzouga cannot be reached and returned from in a day by any scheduled service. The only itinerary the rail operator will sell is a train to Meknes and a night coach arriving at 06:00 the following morning, 15 h 25 in total (ONCF and Supratours availability API, read in Q3 2026).

On a three-night stay, take one day out and keep the rest for the city. On four or five nights, take two and separate them with a day inside the walls, because two long drives in a row is the commonest way people end a Marrakech trip tired of Morocco rather than of Marrakech. The Sahara is a separate holiday and should be planned as one, at three days minimum.

The order that works: the mountains first, while you still have the energy for a walk; the coast second, on the coach, because it is the day that rewards not being on a schedule; the ksar third if the trip is long enough. And if the heat has beaten you before any of that, the honest answer is the Agafay evening at 26.5 km, which asks nothing of you but a jacket after dark.
